Pacific Harbor Seals Observation Locations - Strawberry Hill Picnic Area
While each colony of Pacific harbor seals gather in the respective areas for feeding and hauling-out purposes making identification of them easier to spot, the harbor seals tend to keep their distance away from humans. Also, these Pacific harbor seals are protected under the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 preventing people from getting to close to them. One of the best locations on the Central Oregon Coast for observing them safely in the wild is at the Strawberry Hill Picnic Area where during the right tidal conditions, a nicely-sized group of them gathers on the rocky approaches just offshore. The Strawberry Hill Picnic Area is part of the park facilities contained within the Neptune State Scenic Viewpoint, an Oregon State Park located along the northern coastline section of Lane County. The Strawberry Hill Picnic Area is located along the scenic drive in between Yachats and Florence, and is accessible directly off the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway. The facility offers a scenic picnic area overlooking the sandy pocket beaches lining both ends of the park. The harbor seals enjoy this haul-out site for its protection as well as for its size which adequately supports its group numbers. A good time to visit is when the tide is high enough to create a natural separation from the picnic area viewpoint and the haul-out location encircled by the tide waters of the sea. At this time, the harbor seals enjoy basking in the sun and the wildlife explorer has ample time to observe them and their group behavior in a comfortable setting. During the seal pupping season, the location can be a fun spot to observe the seal pups learning their way in their own brave new world.
