Pacific Harbor Seals - Various Types of Haul-Out Sites

The Oregon Coast is home to four species of pinnipeds including the Pacific harbor seal which can be found easily throughout the entire year along various shoreline locations and other offshore rock formations dotting the coastline. Pacific harbor seals live in small colonies along the Oregon Coast and tend to stay in one general area from which they live and socialize as a localized group. These habitats utilized by the Pacific harbor seals include a variety of haul-out settings geared towards offering them protection from their local predators as well as providing them safety from human disturbance. Further, these locations serve to provide additional protection for rearing their pups while maintaining close proximity to their daily feeding grounds. These haul-out sites feature sandy shorelines near the mouth opening of bays as well as sand bar areas exposed when the tides recede. Other areas used for haul-out sites include rocky ledges and rock outcroppings found along the rugged coastlines of the Oregon Coast in addition to offshore islets located in the nearshore zone. Even man-made items can serve as a haul-out spot for these Pacific harbor seals highlighted by the breakwater jetty built on the inner channel of the Yaquina Bay Jetty System in the Newport Area where the seals hang out frequently.
