Oregon Coast Birding - Brown Pelicans

Brown pelicans possess a huge naked skin pouch suspended from the lower half of their hooked bills enabling them to hold almost three gallons of fish and water inside their mouths after a feeding dive, almost three times the size of their stomachs. Brown pelicans are the only pelican species to plunge into the water from the air diving after their fish prey while utilizing their skin pouches as dip nets. After collecting their captured fishes and water together, brown pelicans drain the water out from the corners of their mouths and then lift their heads backs swallowing their catches. Several attributes aid brown pelicans when in the water including their short tails and legs, and also their web feet well-adapted for swimming. Brown pelicans often prefer to hunt in bays where their food resources flourish in these estuarine waters. On rare occasions, Wildlife Explorers and Birders can be privy to exceptional wildlife moments when brown pelicans uncover schools of fishes in the water, igniting feeding frenzies amongst the brown pelicans and other shore birds. The spectacle of observing several hundred pelicans plunging into the water is unforgettable.
