Oregon Coast Birding - Brown Pelicans

Brown pelicans are a fun and interesting bird species to study during their summer stay here on the Oregon Coast. Along sandy shoreline settings, brown pelicans can be found in both small and large groups flying over the ocean breakers in a variety of flight formations searching for small fishes. Coastal bay estuaries are another habitat area frequently visited by brown pelicans enjoying the abundant fish resources found in these estuarine waters. During the daytime hours, brown pelicans are actively engaged in hunting for food and spread out to numerous coastal areas making them more readily accessible for wildlife exploring activities. One of the best shoreline locations to find brown pelicans is near the Alsea Bay and the beach strands located north of the Bayshore Spit Area where they can be observed flying along the coastline. Another great place to find these birds is at the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area where they can be observed from a park setting renown for its coastal wildlife. Other excellent spots for wildlife observation include the Pirate Cove Area of Depoe Bay and the inner bay waters of the Yaquina Bay Estuary.
