Oregon Coast Birding - Brown Pelicans

While the Oregon Coast abounds in a rich diversity of bird species, the very appearance of a group of brown pelicans flying in tight formations over the water instantly captures the attention of visitors and residents alike. Brown pelicans seem to convey a sense of living on the coast with their mere presence in the air or on land. Brown pelicans migrate every year to the Oregon Coast and can be observed in the region from May to November. During the winter, the brown pelicans return to their breeding grounds located in Southern California. Brown pelicans can be observed during the day flying over the ocean surf or estuarine bays searching for small fishes at the top of the water. Sometimes they can be found flying in a single line formation moving up and down over the water in search of food with each individual staying attentively in line. Other times, brown pelicans appear flying in a V-Shape formation during long flights to other hunting territories or heading to their nighttime roost sites. With their unusual body features and quirky mannerisms, brown pelicans continue to be one the most beloved birds found inhabiting the Oregon Coast.
