Oregon Coast Resident Group of Gray Whales - Feeding Dives

A small group of the gray whale population does not travel all the way to their main northern feeding grounds located in the Arctic Ocean rather this group stays along the Oregon Coast feeding throughout the summer and fall months. While these resident gray whales can be found spy-hopping or breeching in the water on occasion, the most notable behavior observed in the wild is their feeding dive. During the feeding dive, the head of the gray whale is visible on top of the ocean waterline and the whale normally takes a few breaths before starting its dive. Once the dive begins, the whale submerges its head and its body starts rolling forward exposing its shiny back featuring blotchy patterns of gray and black colors from its original birth as well as from barnacles living in its skin. The dive ends with the fluke or the tail of the whale poised in a vertical position before entering into the sea. The dive last between three to six minutes, and then the whale comes up for a new breath and the chance to create another magical spout appearing on the ocean horizon.
