Oregon Coast Birding - Turkey Vultures |
|||||||||||||
| During the summer when raptors are found floating in the air hunting along the bluffs and hillsides facing the coastline, the turkey vultures soaring in these same air currents with their distinctive wing spans positioned in a V-Shape formation in flight are often confused as being hawks or eagles. Once classified as birds of prey, these turkey vultures are now classified within their own bird grouping. Turkey vultures can be found during the day soaring effortlessly in the rising air currents or thermals, often gliding in the air for hours with a minimal amount of flapping their wings. Turkey vultures serve an important role in the various food chains found along the Oregon Coast based on their diet of consuming carrion, the fresh meat off dead animals. Turkey vultures possess excellent daytime vision used for spotting dead animals on the ground as well as having a keen sense of smell for locating their food. Turkey vultures feature a primarily dark brown plumage pattern, a short and hooked ivory-colored bill, and their distinctive bald heads and necks colored red in appearance with no feathers, only covered with a thin layer of down. This attribute of a bald head with no feathers allows the turkey vulture to position itself inside the cavities of dead animals while feeding and still keep itself clean from bacteria and other decaying body wastes. Turkey vultures feature a wing span extending almost six feet in length and wait to start flying during the day until the thermals form at the onset of rising air temps. Also, these birds can be observed standing with their wings spread out, a behavior known as the horaltic pose believed to dry out their wings and bake off bacteria from their bodies. |
