Oregon Coast Birding - Birds of Prey

During the summer months, the lovely blue skies of the Oregon Coast become enlivened with raptors hovering in the air searching the coastal hillsides, wetlands, marshlands and open grass areas for small mammals and rodents to eat. Red-tailed hawks visit the region when their food supply increases and can be observed soaring in the air during the long and sunny days of summer searching for their prey ready to swoop down at any moment upon the slightest detection of movement on the ground. Red-tailed hawks can be found quite often perched on power lines surveying their hunting territories or can be observed circling around in the swirling air currents utilizing their keen eyesight to find their prey. The Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area is one setting where red-tailed hawks can be observed hunting along the open grass fields of the park. Another raptor species visiting the coast on occasions is the red-shouldered hawk. Lesser known, this raptor displays an amazing plumage set of feathers in flight, absolutely spectacular when observed in the wild. Red-shouldered hawks are more commonly found in California but the bird population has started to spread out into more parts of Oregon. Both of these species possess broad wing spans useful for soaring in the air effortlessly for long periods of time. Also, these species capture their prey utilizing their long, sharp, curved claws for grabbing hold of their prey, and also have sharp beaks for ripping apart their food when the size of the food warrants this action in order to eat. While these hawks tend to be found regularly within the inland areas of Oregon, it is always a thrill to find them hovering in the coastal skies above.
