Oregon Coast Birding - Birds of Prey |
|||||||||||||
| While birds of prey tend to hunt separately from each other, there are those rare days when multiple raptor species can be observed together searching for food within the same hunting territories. These atypical days are special gifts bestowed upon the Oregon Coast Birder when bald eagles, ospreys and turkey vultures can be enjoyed sharing the same air space together hovering over wetlands all seeking important food resources. Sometimes there is enough food to satisfy all, and other times the most competitive will claim their prey leaving the others to seek food elsewhere. Besides bald eagles, one of the other remarkable birds of prey species found living along the Central Oregon Coast are ospreys. Ospreys are expert fish hunters and almost all of their diet is based on this food source. Ospreys can be found hovering over the ocean shores yet spend most of their hunting activities capturing their prey in the waters of estuarine bays and local rivers. Adult ospreys feature intensely colored yellow eyes with a keen sense of eyesight capable of spotting small fishes swimming near the surface of the water from several hundred feet above in the air. Adult ospreys display an intricate plumage coloration pattern consisting of a white breast and belly, black back and wing feathers, a dark eyestripe, a white crown and forehead, and finely barred black and gray tail and wing feathers. Ospreys prey on top feeding fishes and possess an oil gland at the top of their tail feathers for making their feathers waterproof. This waterproofing of the feathers aids the ospreys in keeping their feathers less heavy in the water during feeding dives while enabling them to lift their captured prey out of the water and gaining air flight more freely and quickly. |
