Oregon Coast Birding - Birds of Prey

While the various habitats of the Oregon Coast support a diverse range of bird species, the birds of prey species found living within the region remain some of the most elusive to observe on a consistent basis, but when discovered in the wild can create some of the finest moments when participating in Oregon Coast Birding Activities. Even though the population trends of bald eagles are improving, these raptors are often hard to observe along the coast due to the large size of their hunting territories and the abundance levels of their food sources. As unpredictable as they may be, the diligent and dedicated wildlife explorer can be rewarded with many fascinating moments when these incredible raptors suddenly appear in the blue skies soaring effortlessly in the air currents. Bald eagles nest in the region every year and usually come back to the same nesting site used previously. These nest sites are known as eyries, and are generally built high above the ground in tall trees near open water bodies, and well away from human developments. The eyries are made of a large collection of sticks with finer materials of twigs, soft mosses, grasses and feathers lining the inside of the nest. The nest sites can become quite large weighing over a ton. Bald eagles are monogamous and pair for life, unless one of the adults dies and the remaining adult pairs off again. Both adults handle the responsibilities of egg incubation and caring for the eaglets until they leave the nest at around twelve weeks after hatching. The distinctive plumage of adults with their colorations of brown body feathers, white head and tail feathers takes five years to develop. The juvenile birds undergo a set of different plumages over the five year period before reaching their beloved adult coloration pattern.
