| While great egrets invoke a sense of purity with their all white plumages, great blue herons convey a sense of majesty standing almost four feet high in their bluish-gray plumages and their white crown stripe on the top of their heads. Great blue herons frequent the same habitat areas as great egrets hunting within the ocean tides and inland water bodies situated along the bay estuaries and the muddy banks of local rivers including the Yaquina River, the Alsea River and the Yachats River. The long legs of the great blue heron enable it to wade deeper into the water in search for its food plus the body design of the heron incorporates special patches of powder down feathers that is uses to clean it fish prey and keep itself clean from slime and oil in the water. Great blue herons exhibit a recognizable flying behavior pattern in the air extending their broad wings out almost six feet in length together with stretching out their legs straight behind them and folding their neck back into a S-shape formation while in flight. In the air, great blue herons average a flight speed of around 25 mph and a maximum air speed approaching 35 mph. While tall in appearance, adult great blue herons weigh only about five to six pounds. Along the ocean shores, great blue herons can be found in the mornings at dawn searching the calm tides and also at low tides during the day. Also, the Back Bay Portions located within the Yaquina Bay Estuary offer the chance to observe them in the wild right alongside the scenic road heading towards the City of Toledo. Another excellent spot for studying them in the wild is found at the Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge, located near the Gleneden Beach Area. |
