Oregon Coast Birding - Gulls

While most people traveling along the Oregon Coast have encountered gulls in public places such as parks and outdoor restaurants, there is a wildlife aspect to gulls living on the coast often overlooked as to their behavior patterns found in the wild. The Oregon Coast boasts a variety of gull species often very hard to distinguish from each other, even for the expert birder. Generally, the gull species found in the region include the Glaucous-winged gull, and the more prevalent Western gull. Also, other gull species may visit the Oregon Coast in small numbers including California gulls, Mew gulls and Herring gulls. While gulls frequent many areas close to human developments, the birding experience of studying these gull species is enhanced by venturing out into their native habitats along the shoreline or at park settings. It is here in these natural places where the Birder can become aware of their individual behaviors exhibited during their mating season as well as in a group setting when they swarm together in flight defending their chicks from raptors.
