Tide Pools of the Central Oregon Coast - The Food Chain of the Intertidal Zone

The Tide Pools of the Oregon Coast feature a rich diversity of plants and animals grouped together closely forming an intricate food supply chain supporting both local predators inhabiting the immediate intertidal zone and other animal species utilizing these same shoreline settings as a food resource as well. A visit to one of these marine gardens offers the explorer with a chance to observe this fascinating food web in full motion featuring microscopic organisms, floating plankton, weather-hardened plant species and a wide range of marine animals making up the food supply chain. The plant species flourishing in this intertidal zone vary in adaptation based on their proximity to the shoreline and the effects of the tides on them. Intertidal plants available for discovery include Blue-green algae and plankton, surf and eel grasses, sea palms and Dulse, kelp and various forms of sea lettuce. These plant species can be observed intermixed together with other intertidal animals including barnacles and mussels, snails and crabs, and sea anemones forming a magnificent collage of brightly colored tide pool inhabitants. While sea urchins and octopus are occasional predators to the tide pools, sea stars remain the most commonly found predator. Besides underwater predators, other shoreline animals feed along the intertidal zone including such bird species as gulls, pigeon guillemots and black oystercatchers.
