Tide Pools of the Central Oregon Coast - Tide Pool Inhabitants

While the basalt shorelines of the Oregon Coast often appear rugged in their natural appearance and void of life, these coastal settings are home to many tide pool areas teeming with a variety of unusual plants and animals well adapted to the rapid changes found along the tidal seas. Upon closer examination of these settings, the wildlife explorer can find an assortment of various species equipped for different tidal conditions all living within close proximity of each other. During low tide cycles, the explorer can observe large clusters of mussels and barnacles closed up tight in their shell bodies exposed on the rocky shelves of the coastline after the ocean tides have retreated. Under water, these same mussels and barnacles open up and feed on plankton brought in by the circulating waters of the incoming tides. On the lower levels of the rocks, a host of other animals thrive in both exposed open air and under water conditions including sea anemones and urchins, sea cucumbers, chitons and limpets, snails, sculpins and other small fishes. Sea stars are one of the most common animals observed within the Tide Pools of the Oregon Coast well-liked for their bright colors and their spiny outer bodies. While slow in motion, these sea stars are one of the biggest predators feasting on the bounty of the tide pools.
