Steller Sea Lions - Sea Lion Caves

Along the picturesque route of the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway is the popular coastal attraction known as the Sea Lion Caves, located near Sea Lion Point just south of the Heceta Head Lighthouse Area. Sea Lion Point is a wonderful natural wildlife setting supporting a variety of nesting seabirds as well as containing a mainland rookery site for about 200 Steller sea lions. During the fall and winter months, the Steller sea lions move into the large natural sea cave providing them with protection from the rough seas and the harsh weather elements found outside. During the spring and summer months, the sea lion population moves outside to the rocky ledges located in front of the sea cave entrance where the pregnant female sea lions will give birth to their pups. The mothers will nurse their young for just over one year. Also, the rocky ledges will host the herd bulls who will keep a constant watch over their female harems during the breeding season lasting from May to July. Also, the attraction offers an elevator ride to the bottom of the sea cave, a visitor center with a gift store plus two wildlife viewpoints offering scenic views of the area.
