California Sea Lions - Port of Newport Port Dock One

Along the historic Newport Bayfront District, the Port of Newport’s Port Dock One features public access to its wooden pier platform built for enjoying scenic vistas of the Yaquina Bay and distant view lines of the architectural elegance of the Yaquina Bay Bridge. This wooden platform built at Port Dock One draws many visitors each day taking in the nice water views of the bay as well as observing the California sea lions hanging out on the floating docks constructed below the pier structure. The floating docks are utilized by the sea lions as a haul-out spot and the sea lions can be viewed resting, barking and playing together on the wooden docks. Due to their flexible body structure, the sea lions sleep in a variety of positions whether on land or in the water, and are quite amusing when they lay on each other in a restful group. The crowd gatherings around Port Dock One do not disturb the sea lions and the sea lions often put on a show playing and barking at each other while keeping the spectators quite happy. Also, this dock area provides a great spot for observing their body features well-adapted for their aquatic life underneath the ocean.
