Spouts in the Air! - Gray Whales |
|||||||||||||
| Suddenly on the horizon, the ocean air is embraced with the warm water vapor being propelled from the two blowholes of a gray whale rising almost 15 feet in the air. Its a magical moment on the Oregon Coast when these spouts suddenly appear letting us know that these magnificent mammals are in the area. Whale spouts are the main observation point used by whale watchers for locating gray whales in the ocean waters off the Oregon Coast. A spout rising in the air from a gray whale instantly captures our attention drawing our focus onto them offshore. These spouts appear as part of their normal breathing functions during their resting, swimming and feeding activities. Gray whales have two blowholes located near the top of their head and the expulsion of the air being propelled upwards can be heard almost a half mile away. The sound and shape of these rising spouts are truly memorable moments, often connecting people forever to their experience of observing these amazing creatures in the wild along the Oregon Coast. When the gray whales are swimming during their annual migrations, the spouts will appear on a more consistent basis on the horizon as they travel along the coastline. During their feeding periods, the gray whales will take a few breathes at the waterline of the ocean, and then they will dive to the ocean bottoms for gaining access to their food supply. These dives generally take from 3 to 6 minutes as they feed on the muddy ocean floors. A small group of the gray whale population ignores traveling all the way to their main feeding grounds in the Arctic Ocean during the summer months and resides instead along the Central Oregon Coast, especially in the area from Depoe Bay to Newport. Both of these two communities offer the chance to search for whale spouts directly from the shoreline or to take an ocean excursion from their harbor areas out to observe these gray whales in the wild offshore. |
