Yaquina Head Lighthouse - Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area

From the north jetty area in the City of Newport Oregon, the combined beach strands of Nye Beach and Agate Beach connect together and head north eventually meeting the basalt rock promontory known as Yaquina Head. Located at the western end of this headland is the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, still operational today as a navigational aid to mariners since its first lighting dating back to August 20, 1873. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse was Oregon’s fifth lighthouse built and with its Lighthouse Tower at 93 feet in height, also carries the distinction as Oregon’s Tallest Lighthouse. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is one of the key attractions of the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, a park facility now managed by the Federal Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Department of the Interior. A tour of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse is available to the general public during its posted hours of operation and includes interpretive displays and the opportunity to climb 110 stairs to peek at the first order Fresnel Lens in the lantern house. The Lighthouse Tower and its adjoining oil house are now the only structures remaining on the station grounds, which featured several different configurations of outbuildings over the history of the station. While the Yaquina Head Lighthouse is a major attraction within the park, the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area offers visitors a wealth of other activities including excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Key highlights include a very informative interpretive center, several tide pool areas for exploring the intertidal zone along the water’s edge, several observation areas for viewing the abundant wildlife of the area, and several nature trails to take in the fantastic coastal scenery. With the lighthouse still in operation, some of Newport’s residential neighborhoods are very fortunate to have scenic views of the lighthouse during the day plus at night, the ability to watch its centuries-old beacon of light continuing to shine out over the ocean helping to protect the local shipping lanes from danger.
