Cape Meares Lighthouse - Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint |
||||||||||||
| While the Cape Meares Lighthouse draws many visitors to the Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint, this Oregon State Park features many more amenities and attractions that make it worthwhile to stay longer plus visit over a period of time to enjoy the seasonal aspects of nature and the wildlife found on the Oregon Coast. The main parking lot serves as the hub for accessing many of these attractions including the Sally Jacobson Interpretive Kiosk. The kiosk is located next to the parking lot and includes interpretive display placards on various aspects of the Lighthouse and the wildlife that inhabit the Cape Meares Area. Another outstanding feature is the scenic viewpoints available throughout the park for visitors to enjoy the awesome coastline scenery plus observing wildlife in its natural setting. One of the parks main viewpoints overlooks the north side of Cape Meares and the cliffs located near the Cape Meares National Wildlife Refuge. A pair of Peregrine Falcons have been nesting in a grassy area on top of one of these cliffs and this viewpoint allows for the opportunity to observe their nest during the raising of their chicks in springtime. The Peregrine Falcon is considered to be the worlds fastest animal reaching speeds up to 240 miles per hour. Another wheel chair accessible trail from the parking lot leads to a Sitka Spruce known as the Octopus Tree. The tree is deep-rooted in Native American lore as a burial tree shaped when it was young to hold the canoes of a chiefs family. The tree does not have one main trunk, instead the tree has grown with individual limbs running horizontal first and then growing vertical towards the sky. Several viewpoints and picnic table areas are available in the park with views oriented looking south towards the Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge, located offshore from the community of Oceanside. The refuge is home to many nesting seabirds including one of the largest colonies of Common Murres south of Alaska. Also, the refuge is well known for the Tufted Puffins that nest in these protected waters. |
