Cape Meares Lighthouse - Lighthouse Interpretive Shop and Wildlife Viewpoints

In 1978, a replica workroom was added to the Cape Meares Lighthouse connecting it to the lighthouse tower as well as changes made to the spiral staircase leading to the lantern room. This workroom now houses the Cape Meares Lighthouse Interpretive Center and Gift Shop. Besides the opportunity to explore the lighthouse tower on a self-guided tour, the gift store provides a wide variety of Oregon Coast related items for sale including books, clothing, collectibles, postcards, posters and other interpretive products based on the Cape Meares Lighthouse and other lighthouses in general. Outside of the Interpretive Center, several wildlife viewpoints are available for visitors to enjoy the surrounding seascapes, the natural beauty of the wildlife living around the Cape Meares Area and a viewing spot for whale watching during the annual Gray Whale Migration. These viewpoints feature nature-based interpretive information display placards covering different aspects of the Cape Meares Wildlife highlighted by gray whales, harbor seals and sea lions, nesting seabirds and a variety of other animal species. Two prominent offshore rock islets add to the beauty of the cape and are visible from either the lantern house or from the ground level viewpoints. The closer islet to the shore is known as Pillar Rock and also is referred to sometimes as Elephant Rock based on the features of its silhouette. The rock islet farther out to sea is named Pyramid Rock and is also referred to as Frog Rock, for its shape that appears to be like a sitting frog looking up to the sky. Both of these rock islets are protected under the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and serve a variety of animal species. Due to the flatter top of Pillar Rock, Common Murres use the rock islet to nest in sizeable colony numbers plus Brandt’s Cormorants nest on the rock too. Also, Pyramid Rock hosts nesting seabirds as well. Additionally, Harbor Seals and two types of Sea Lions use the rocks as haul-out locations.
