Cape Meares Lighthouse - Restoration of Lighthouse |
||||||||||||
| The Cape Meares Lighthouse Tower was officially illuminated on January 1, 1890 and was the seventh lighthouse built on the Oregon Coast. Under the guidance of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the lighthouse tower and the stations outbuildings took approximately one year to complete. The Cape Meares Lighthouse is sited at 217 feet above sea level along with its height above ground at 38 feet, affording the lighthouse with the distinctive mark of being the smallest lighthouse on the Oregon Coast. The stations outbuildings included two multi-level dwellings for housing the keepers and their families, two oil houses for storing kerosene and a barn. Most of the food consumed on the station grounds was grown in local gardens. Chickens and cows were raised there as well. In 1895, a workroom was added to the lighthouse for connecting to the tower. After the decommission of the lighthouse, the control of the property eventually shifted to the Oregon State Parks Department, and was further supported by the many concerned citizens of Tillamook County who did not want to see the lighthouse torn down. Efforts were made to restore the condition of the lighthouse including the formation of a support group of citizens known as the Friends of the Cape Meares Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge, Inc. This group now assists in conducting visitor tours plus helping with the ongoing maintenance of the lighthouse. In 1978, a workroom based on the same measurements as of the original workroom was added to the tower and now houses the Cape Meares Lighthouse Interpretive Center and Gift Shop. The door access on the workroom was changed from the original installation and was moved to the opposite side to support easier access for visitors. In 1980, the Cape Meares Lighthouse was opened officially to the general public on Memorial Day after undergoing extensive restoration repairs and repainting to the Tower, becoming one of the main attractions located at the Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint. Additional restoration activities were completed in 2003 as well. |
