Heceta Head Lighthouse - Panoramic Views of the Lighthouse |
||||||||||||
| South of the state park, the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway leads through the Cape Creek Tunnel and traverses up along the sea-facing cliffs towards Sea Lion Point and the very popular Sea Lion Caves, the largest sea cave in the world. Along the roadway are several turnouts making up the Heceta Lighthouse Viewpoint. The viewpoint features intense angles looking straight down the cliff faces towards the ocean waters churning below as well as sensational vistas looking out over the coastline in the direction of the Heceta Head Lighthouse Station and the Heceta Head Promontory. Together with the similar views found at the Sea Lion Caves Facility, the Heceta Lighthouse Viewpoint affords an unforgettable panoramic of the Heceta Head Lighthouse standing guard over the Pacific Ocean. The Sea Lion Caves is privately run and features an elevator ride descending 208 feet to the bottom of the sea cave for exploring this natural wonder. The height of the sea cave is equivalent to a twelve-story building and dates back 25 million years when the ocean waters started to naturally form the cave. The inside of the sea cave along with the rocky ledges outside are home to a large Steller (Also known as the Northern Sea Lion) Sea Lion rookery. The Sea Lions populate the sea cave area throughout the year including breeding and raising their young. During the fall and winter months, the sea lions can be seen inside the cave where during the warmer months of spring and summer the sea lions bask in the sunshine outdoors. Also, several species of nesting seabirds breed and nest in the cliffs and rocks around Sea Lion Point including Pigeon Guillemots, Rhinoceros Auklets, Western Gulls and one of Oregons largest colonies of Brandts Cormorants. For those fortunate visitors who venture upon the Heceta Head Lighthouse, an unforgettable feeling remains of viewing one of the most awe-inspiring magical places found anywhere in the world. |
