Heceta Head Lighthouse - Exploring the Heceta Head Coastline

Besides touring the Heceta Head Interpretive Center and the Heceta Head Lighthouse, the Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint State Park Facility hosts a variety of other activities to extend your day at the park. The visitor can explore the architectural features and structural footings of the Cape Creek Bridge, completed in 1932. The waters of Cape Creek work their way past the bridge and head west draining into the south end of the Devils Elbow Beach. Along the creek was once a single room schoolhouse serving the early light-keepers and homesteaders plus the work crews who built the Oregon Coast Highway. Devils Elbow Beach offers the park visitor a chance to take a leisurely stroll along the beach, explore tide pools and natural caves, enjoy the wave action or surfers in the water, or relish the beautiful seascapes and sunsets of the area. The park includes a variety of picnic tables scattered along the beach and the lawn areas surrounding the parking lot. For hiking activities, the park facility offers the lighthouse trail leading up (150 feet elevation gain) to the lighthouse and the second landing area. At this landing area, a stairwell connects to an extended trail system running north along the headland and later dropping down to the sandy beaches of Carl G. Washburne State Park and Campground. The elevation drop of 600 feet on the north side of the headland to the beach floor creates an added challenge for hikers but the rewards are amazing ocean views looking north towards Cape Perpetua and the natural scenery of hiking through an evergreen rain forest.
