Heceta Head Lighthouse - Wildlife at Heceta Head

The Heceta Head Area is home to a wide variety of wildlife, especially abundant during the annual seabird nesting season where the offshore rocks and cliffs are utilized as nesting grounds. The basalt rock formation of Heceta Head at 1,000 feet above sea level is spectacular in its own right and yet the constant erosion effects of nature together with the onrush of crashing ocean waves on the shoreline have added another aspect to the area’s scenic qualities. All along the lighthouse trail, the visitor is reminded of the geological events that occurred millions of years ago and how nature has reshaped the area into its present form, highlighted by a visit to the lookout over the Heceta Churn and its neighboring offshore rocks. The Heceta Churn features a large water channel carved out of the basalt coastline whereby the incoming surf is hurled onto the rocks in a dazzling display of cascading water floating in the air. The lookout provides an opportunity to view the wave action around the Heceta Churn plus offers exceptional views of the offshore rocks and steep cliffs located near the headland. Heceta Head features several offshore rock islets known as Parrot Rock, Pyramid Rock and Conical Rock, all protected as part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. The cliffs and islets host a variety of nesting seabirds including Common Murres, Brandt’s and Pelagic Cormorants, and Pigeon Guillemots. Also, Birds of Prey can be observed in the area including Bald Eagles and a pair of Peregrine Falcons.
