Heceta Head Lighthouse - Guided Tours of the Lighthouse
During select months, the Heceta Head Lighthouse is open for guided tours offering visitors a perspective on the history of the lighthouse station plus providing a rare glimpse at the rotating lens assembly in operation. The Lighthouse Tour Guide greets visitors outside and starts the tour with information about Heceta Head and historical accounts of living in the area. The tour moves inside to the Workroom Exhibit featuring antiques, historical photos of the lighthouse station and information about the traveling library system used by the U.S. Lighthouse Service. The U.S. Lighthouse Service created the library as a form of entertainment for the keepers with about 400 libraries in circulation. Each time the supply ships arrived, the traveling library box was swapped out for a fresh supply of reading materials. The next exhibit on the tour is the Weight Room and its colorful red brick interior. In order to operate the clocking mechanism of the rotating lens assembly, a 200-pound weight and cable were suspended vertically down the center of the circular tower. The light-keeper had to crank the cable up to the clock assembly located in the lantern house every four hours in order to maintain the proper rotation of the lens, similar in style to how a Grandfather Clock operated. When the windows were closed up in the 1960s, the whitewashed interiors started to have moisture problems and were later removed exposing the red brick interior. The tour proceeds up the stairwell to the Service Room Exhibit located on the second landing, an area used by the keepers to store their tools and cleaning supplies.
