Heceta Head Lighthouse

In the 1890s, the Heceta Head Area was very remote, making the receipt of supplies needed to build the light station very arduous. A wagon road was built but proved problematic during heavy storms and winter weather conditions. At Cape Cove, supply ships offloaded some of the construction materials to smaller surfboats that were rowed to shore to meet the wagons for transport up to the job site. Other materials were offloaded into the ocean and floated to the beach during the right sea conditions. The one-way trip to Florence took almost seven hours and had to be timed correctly to coincide with the right tidal conditions, as part of the trail was located on the beach itself. A crew of 56 was brought into the area to build the lighthouse station and lived in tent sites around Heceta Head. Construction materials were procured within the region or shipped in from outside areas. The timber came from mills in the Florence and Mapleton Area, the brick and mortar supplies from San Francisco and the rocks used for the base of the lighthouse tower from the Clackamas River Quarry located near Portland. The brick tower was constructed with approximately 200,000 bricks built with a double-walled structural fortification technique allowing for air cavities within the walls to help maintain temperature conditions inside the tower. As technology progressed, the light source was updated and eventually became fully automated in 1963, ending the need for on-site light-keepers. After automation, the U.S. Coast Guard closed off the windows to protect the site and to prevent vandalism. Today, the incredible views can be enjoyed outdoors at the lighthouse viewpoint featuring terrific vistas of the park and the southern coastline area leading towards Sea Lion Point and sometimes on a clear day, the beaches and jetties in Florence are visible.
