| At the first landing area of the lighthouse trail, the pathway proceeds northward to the Heceta Head Lighthouse Interpretive Store and then curves up the hill towards the second landing area and the historic structures of the Heceta Head Lighthouse. The Interpretive Store is housed in the generator room of the garage structure built at the Heceta Head Lighthouse Station during World War Two. At this time, the lighthouse reservation was closed to civilians and about 75 men were stationed at Heceta Head attending to guard reconnaissance along the beaches of the Oregon Coast. Fearing an invasion from Japanese Forces, the beaches were patrolled on foot 24 hours a day along with the use of guard dogs for added support. After the head keepers dwelling was removed, the Coast Guard erected wooden barracks next to the assistant keeper's dwelling during World War Two and then removed them after the war. The garage structure remained and on November 28, 1978, was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Interpretive Store features a variety of lighthouse-themed merchandise including specific products highlighting the Heceta Head Lighthouse plus other items relating to the Oregon Coast and its amazing wildlife. From the Interpretive Store, the trail continues it way up the hill to the second landing area and the ending point for the lighthouse trail. The second landing contains the lighthouse structures and a fenced area for viewing the wildlife located on the surrounding offshore rocks. The scenic views from the second landing are terrific, featuring vistas of the Devils Elbow Beach, the Cape Creek Bridge and the surrounding coastline of Sea Lion Point to the south. By taking the climb up to the second landing area, the visitor is rewarded with fabulous views of the ocean waters swirling 150 feet below and the opportunity to examine the Heceta Head Lighthouse firsthand, standing at 56 feet in height. |
