| The lighthouse trail leads up the ocean bluff to the first landing area near the grounds of the Heceta Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast. The trail is a gravel pathway groomed for ease of travel and features some nice scenic viewpoints along the way. The pathway meanders past a cascading creek, through several stands of evergreen trees and past a very large spruce tree. The trail used now is the remnants of an old wagon road that was built to bring supplies up to the lighthouse during its initial construction and afterwards when the station was operational. There are several scenic viewpoints along the way to relax and take-in the amazing coastal scenery of the Heceta Head Area. The trail offers south facing views overlooking the Devils Elbow Beach, the picnic areas along the beach, and the cliff faces surrounding the Cape Creek Bridge. Proceeding up the trail, the views parallel the breakwater lines of the oncoming ocean waves as they pour over the surrounding coastline. Further up the trail, a wooden-railed landing offers terrific views of the offshore rocks that surround Heceta Head. These rocks are protected under the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and feature a variety of coastal inhabitants seeking the protection of the offshore rocks and closer access to their feeding grounds. The rocks serve as a nesting place for several species of seabirds plus the cliffs hosts other bird species as well. Additionally, the rocks offer a haul-out location for seals and sea lions. The trail continues on up to a turnout that heads west out to a small viewpoint overlooking the Heceta Churn. The Heceta Churn has been formed by thousands of years of constant pounding by the ocean and the force of air compressed ahead of waves breaking, further widening the opening in the basalt crack. The viewpoint overlooks this deep chasm with the ocean waters crashing below and includes a couple of interpretive placards about the area. At the main trail, the pathway continues on up to the first landing area, the location for the Heceta Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast and the Heceta Head Lighthouse Interpretive Store. |
