Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint and National Wildlife Refuge

The entrance to the Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint and National Wildlife Refuge is located on the west side of the Three Capes Scenic Drive. The park access roadway heads west a short distance and meets up with the main entrance sign for the park. Located near this main entrance sign is a trailhead that provides access to one of the nature trails that runs through the Cape Meares National Wildlife Refuge and its old growth forest of Sitka Spruce and Western Hemlock. Some of the Sitka Spruce Trees range in age from 70 to 240 years old while some of the Western Hemlock Trees range in age from 100 to 200 years old. Continuing west, the roadway winds down a hill past some beautiful evergreen trees until it reaches the main parking lot for the Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint. This Oregon State Park Facility includes a variety of outdoor features including wildlife observation decks with bench seating, informative nature-based interpretive display placards, restroom facilities, picnic tables and lawn areas, and several additional nature trails. From the main parking lot, a wide asphalt trail supporting wheelchair access leads west approximately a quarter mile in length to the tip of Cape Meares and the Cape Meares Lighthouse and Gift Store. The pathway to the lighthouse features a couple of viewpoint areas designed for looking at the cliffs on the north side of the cape and the ocean waters below. These viewpoints provide an excellent location for bird watching.
