First lit in 1894, most wonder how the lighthouse was built on such a rugged setting and in such a remote place. The Heceta Head Lighthouse does possess a rich history and still today serves as a navigational aid to mariners at sea. The Heceta Head Area is located in Northern Lane County and is sited 14 miles north of Florence, Oregon. As with most of Oregon’s ocean-facing promontories, the headland of Heceta Head dates back to an ancient lava flow. Over time, the forces of nature and the onrush of crashing waves have shaped the headland and its coastline into a magnificent setting with several offshore rocks teeming with wildlife. The Heceta Head Lighthouse is one of the main attractions found at the Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint, a superb park facility administered by the Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department.
