Yaquina Bay Lighthouse - Lighthouse Time Period Exhibits

The second story of the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse features the sleeping areas of the dwelling and includes a total of four chambers or bedrooms, each designed originally with a fireplace and closet storage. The two west side bedrooms afford fabulous views of the ocean waves and the sandy beach area of Nye Beach. The self-guided tour offers displays set-up in each of the four chambers featuring antique furnishings and other time period items, all geared towards providing a historic perspective of a lifestyle now eclipsed by more modern technology. While the historic exhibits portray a view of lighthouse living, the actual experience of this lifestyle was one of constant hard work and sometimes isolation. The keeper was responsible to keep the light on from dusk to dawn and then during the day, prepare the lighthouse for the next evening’s operation. The keeper was responsible to keep a log of daily occurrences, maintain the condition of the lighthouse and make emergency repairs, and handle the manual labor tasks of moving and storing supplies and firewood. The keeper was responsible for making both mechanical and building repairs as needed, as well as handling any painting and cleaning activities required to keep the lighthouse in order. The Lighthouse Service was organized into districts and the keeper had to be ready for an on-site inspection from the district inspector at any moment. The condition of the lighthouse and the dwelling were inspected thoroughly, even in the areas where the families lived. The inspector could invoke demerits if the station did not meet the standards set out by the Lighthouse Service. Also, the keeper had to accommodate the inspector and provide a sleeping area during the inspector’s visits. For sustaining their food needs, the keeper and his family tended to vegetable gardens set-up on the property in addition to raising chicken, cows and other livestock. The pantry was used for storing food supplies and staples such as flour, salt, sugar and dried beans delivered occasionally by the supply boat. While at times difficult, most keepers were very proud of their job status and carried themselves with a great sense of pride.
