Yaquina Bay Lighthouse - Lighthouse Time Period Exhibits

One of the highlights in visiting the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is the self-guided tour of the exhibit areas. The first and only keeper assigned duty to the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse Station was Charles Peirce. Charles Peirce and his wife Sarah, and their six children living at home (later a seventh child was born in Newport) were transferred from the Cape Blanco Station to the new station. Due to the size of Peirce’s family, the lighthouse floorplan on the second level was changed to accommodate more chamber (bedroom) rooms during the original construction period. The dwelling’s basement now houses the Interpretive Store and a media room running a short video on the history of both Yaquina Lighthouses. The main level includes the front entryway, a wooden stairwell system leading to the next level above and below, a dining room, a kitchen and a pantry, a parlor, and a room called the oil room. The time period exhibits are tastefully done and feature many antiques to provide the visitor with a sense of the living conditions experienced by the Peirce Family during their three-year stay from 1871 to 1874. The Parlor Exhibit offers insight into how the family might have relaxed and features wonderful antique furniture and an old-fashioned organ pump with a picture of Charles Peirce on the mantle. Other exhibits include displays on the dining room, the pantry and the kitchen area. The kitchen was the only room in the dwelling with running water, which was accessed from a hand pump mounted near the kitchen sink and connected to a rain-fed cistern located outside.
