Yaquina Bay Lighthouse - Restoration of the Lighthouse

In the mid 1800s, mariners traveling along Oregon’s shipping lanes were greatly concerned about the hazards found along the shoreline, especially heightened at night or during the onset of bad weather conditions. Mariners were concerned about reaching the Yaquina Bay and passing safely over the dangerous bar crossing leading into the bay plus navigating past the Yaquina Head Promontory and its many offshore rocks and underwater shoals. Pressure was put on the U.S. Government to act and in March of 1869, Congress appropriated funds for harbor lights, buoys and two lighthouses. The first lighthouse built was the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse in Newport Oregon, completed and lit for the first time on November 3, 1871. The lighthouse design was implemented as a harbor entrance lighthouse and was equipped with a fifth order Fresnel Lens that was seen out at sea at 11 miles. With the completion of the more powerful light station at Yaquina Head in 1873, the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse was decommissioned on October 1, 1874. After extensive restoration efforts conducted by the Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department and many concerned citizens, the lighthouse was re-lit as a privately maintained aid to navigation on December 7, 1996 in a special ceremony held with the U.S. Coast Guard. Today, the public can tour this meticulously restored lighthouse now back in its prime.
