Yaquina Bay Lighthouse - Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site
The Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site is a facility within the Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department and is located on the northern tip of the Yaquina Bay in Newport Oregon. The park is accessible from two main entry points, the first being from a turn off lane from Highway 101 either heading south towards the Yaquina Bay Bridge or via a turn off heading north off the bridge. The other access is from a residential street located at the north end of the park that connects to the surrounding neighborhoods overlooking the southern portion of Nye Beach. Along with the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, the park features a variety of outstanding amenities including open and sheltered picnic tables, several beach access points to Nye Beach and the north jetty, public parking and restrooms, a recreational area with playground equipment, and the Jetty Overlook Platform with interpretive displays. Also, the park features the Fishermen’s Memorial Sanctuary offering a place of mourning and a monument for honoring mariners who have lost their lives at sea. The sanctuary building includes a display ledge for honoring individuals with flowers or other personal remembrances plus bench seating is available for quiet reflection or for group gatherings. The park has several nice picnic grounds, some offering wonderful views of the lighthouse and the surrounding seascapes. The park is a great location for watching the wildlife around the jetties and taking in a colorful sunrise or sunset.
