Cape Meares Lighthouse
The Three Capes Scenic Drive is one of the most popular scenic drives found along the Oregon Coast and covers an area from Tillamook to Pacific City. The scenic drive is named after the three capes (Cape Meares, Cape Lookout, and Cape Kiwanda) encountered on the route. The drive features many wonderful Points of Interest set along the Pacific Ocean and exemplifies the best scenic qualities of the Pacific Northwest. Cape Meares is the northernmost of the three capes and is home to the Cape Meares Lighthouse, sited on the western edge of the cape. While Cape Meares is beautiful naturally in its own way, the surrounding areas of the cape are remarkable as well. The surrounding areas feature three national wildlife refuges, and many offshore rock formations providing protective habitats to many animal and plant species. The three refuges are known as the Cape Meares National Wildlife Refuge, the Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge and the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Cape Meares juts out into the Pacific Ocean and rises approximately 200 feet above sea level with sheer rock faces heading vertically towards the ocean waters. The small residential community of Cape Meares is located to the north of the cape a few miles away and overlooks the Bayocean Spit and Tillamook Bay. The community of Oceanside is located to the south of the cape and affords awesome views of the offshore rock formations of the Three Arch Rocks Wilderness Area.
