Yaquina Bay Lighthouse - Newport's Two Lighthouses

The City of Newport Oregon is very fortunate to have two Oregon Coast Lighthouses located within its community, known as the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse and the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. While these lighthouses continue to draw large amounts of visitors inspiring to learn more about their stories, the local citizenry remain tremendously proud of their ongoing efforts in preserving these coastal treasures for all people to enjoy. Without the vision and dedication of the many people over the years that chose to fight for the preservation of these lighthouses, we may not have seen the wonderful restoration activities that have been completed on each lighthouse. Today, these cherished lighthouses are now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse was designed as a harbor entrance lighthouse and was equipped with a fifth order Fresnel Lens seen out to sea at 11 miles. The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is believed to be the oldest structure in Newport and the only historic wooden Oregon lighthouse still standing. The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse was first lit using a whale oil lamp on November 3, 1871 and was decommissioned on October 1, 1874. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse was first lit in 1873 and essentially erased the need for a beacon at Yaquina Bay. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse was equipped with a first order Fresnel Lens seen at sea at 19 miles and was designed as a coastal lighthouse. Today, the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse serves as a privately maintained aid to navigation for mariners approaching the jetties of Yaquina Bay.
