Yaquina Head Lighthouse - Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area

The Interpretive Center features a gift store offering retail merchandise and interpretive books about the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, the Yaquina Head Area, and other wildlife books for sale. Daily, the BLM posts a summary of key activities including the recent wildlife seen in the park. Throughout most of the year, certain species are available for observation including the Pacific Harbor Seal. A great opportunity to observe Harbor Seals is along the Lighthouse Trail with several observation decks oriented towards Seal Island. Seal Island is located just offshore from Cobble Beach and is part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. The seals use the Seal Island Area for hauling out to rest and to nurse their pups. Other animals utilize the Yaquina Head Area during migrations from other nesting or breeding grounds. Brown Pelicans can be seen generally from May to November using the rocks to rest after feeding out in the ocean. Also, shorebirds will use the rocks for resting purposes, or for feeding in the intertidal zones when the tides change. The Yaquina Head Area is a very popular spot for watching the annual migration of Gray Whales passing by twice a year. A visit to the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area is about nature and our harmony with it, coupled with the ongoing tradition of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse Station offering centuries-old aid to navigation to mariners. Taking time to visit Yaquina Head during a sunny day or at the approach of an evening sunset seems to bring out the outstanding aspects of the park, especially with Oregon's tallest lighthouse standing guard.
