Yaquina Head Lighthouse - Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area

The Yaquina Head Area features the main headland where the Yaquina Head Lighthouse is situated, as well as many offshore islets and sheltered rock areas supporting a wide diversity of wildlife, both above and below the ocean waters. These offshore areas are protected under the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. The Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area is a paradise for bird watching activities, both offshore and onshore in the various nature zones surrounding the park. In spring and summer, the offshore rocks come alive with nesting seabirds arriving from the ocean waters to nest during their annual breeding season. Also, many other migratory seabirds and shorebirds use the rocks and islets for resting and feeding purposes. The islands and cliffs are ideal for seabirds to nest as these locations are close to their food sources plus offering them safety from ground predators and human disturbance. Just offshore from the Lighthouse Observation Deck is Colony Rock. A large number of Common Murres use the flatter surfaces on top of the rock to breed in colonies along with Brandt’s Cormorants. Other species use the steep cliffs for nesting and protection like Pigeon Guillemots and Pelagic Cormorants. Other species nesting in the area include Western and Glaucous-Winged Gulls, and occasionally Tufted Puffins, Black Oystercatchers, and Rhinoceros Auklets. Also, birds of prey like Bald Eagles and Osprey hunt the area for smaller birds and chicks.
