Yaquina Head Lighthouse - Lighthouse Observation Decks

The rugged areas surrounding the Yaquina Head Lighthouse are spectacular based on the volcanic past of the headland that dates back to 14 million years ago, and the constant forces of nature eroding away at its shoreline. The Yaquina Headland juts out about a mile into the Pacific Ocean offering a scenic viewpoint that captures the magnificent beauty of both the north and south coastline areas of Newport, Oregon. Further adding to the scenic qualities of the park facilities are the protected rock islets located just offshore supporting a vast array of wildlife species both above ground and below the ocean waters. As part of the park design at the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, a parking lot is available for the convenience of exploring the western portion of the headland and its wonderful park amenities. A paved pathway connects many of the park amenities together into one system including providing access to the lighthouse, several wildlife observation decks, a stairwell leading down to Cobble Beach and its tide pool area, and to the trailhead for the Salal Hill Nature Trail. A trail from the parking lot leads to the Yaquina Head Lighthouse and to the oil house entry for gaining access to the interpretive tours. Outside the lighthouse are several observation decks for enjoying the coastal scenery, the wildlife and the lighthouse itself. Standing next to 162 feet of lighthouse structure adds another perspective on how amazing the construction work was done in the 1870s to build a lighthouse that has stood the test of time and nature’s harsh ocean elements. Near the lighthouse is a memorial honoring those individuals who have lost their lives at sea and reminding us of the importance today of the lighthouse’s role in guiding mariners out of danger. In addition, several viewpoints offer interpretive displays about the geologic features of the headland, both past and present that are affecting the Yaquina Head Area.
