Yaquina Head Lighthouse - Recent Lighthouse Restoration Efforts

Recently, the Yaquina Head Lighthouse underwent an extensive restoration from top-to-bottom to preserve its classic structure and restore it to the same condition and appearance as when completed by the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1873. The project was funded for almost one million dollars through a special appropriation from Congress to the Bureau of Land Management. The restoration efforts included a variety of repairs to the lighthouse structure including repainting the lighthouse to its original paint scheme of white, black and gray along with applying state-of-the-art paint coatings. The restoration activities featured the removal of the exterior paint from all the years of keeper maintenance from the outside of the Tower and the Oil House, plus from the inside and outside of the lantern house. This repainting process returned the lighthouse tower to white paint and the Tower’s decorative ironworks and rooftop to black paint. This coloration re-established the lighthouse to its original “Daymark” helping mariners identify their location during the day based on the lighthouse color scheme. Over the years, the weather and temperature extremes battered the exterior of the lighthouse and masonry repairs were completed to the brickwork as well. Due to the ever-present salty air conditions, the ironwork and roof structure components around the Tower were inspected and either repaired or replaced with new parts. Other restoration activities included unclogging the air ventilation system used in the lantern house, repairing the rooftop ventilator, replacing the old lightning protection system with a new system, and repainting the interior of the tower and the stairwell. Also the light was enhanced with the addition of 24 brand new panes of tempered, optically flat glass installed in the lantern room. Journeying up the lantern tower affords the visitor the chance to admire the fine workmanship completed during the restoration project as well as enjoy first-hand the beauty of the lighthouse while in mint condition.
