The Headland of Heceta Head - The Heceta Head Lighthouse

South of the Washburne State Park is the Headland of Heceta Head, the Oregon Coast’s most photographed scenic attraction and the scintillating location of the Heceta Head Lighthouse Station. First lit in August 1894, the Heceta Head Lighthouse is the most powerful lighthouse built on the Oregon Coast and today still continues its 100 year plus tradition of providing navigational aid to mariners at sea. The Heceta Head Lighthouse is located on the western portion of Heceta Head and is a key attraction of the Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint, an Oregon State Park Facility. The park offers a nature trail leading up to the Heceta Head Lighthouse and lighthouse tours are available during the summer season with Interpretive Guides sharing stories about the history of the Heceta Head Area. Also on the trail are the Lighthouse Gift Shop, the Heceta Churn and Wildlife Refuge Viewpoint, and the Heceta Head Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast, both an overnight lodging inn and a heritage museum. The Heceta Head Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast is operated by the U.S. Forest Service and is located in the residential dwelling formerly occupied by the Assistant Lightkeepers and their families. The park features several nice areas for picnicking, a terrific beach strand surrounding the mouth of Cape Creek, and intriguing views of the historic Cape Creek Bridge. From the park, Highway 101 proceeds southward through the Cape Creek Tunnel and then upwards along the steep cliffs towards Sea Lion Point and the popular visitor attraction of the Sea Lion Caves.
