The Rocky Knoll Area - The Beach Strand of Roosevelt Beach
The sandy beach areas located in front of the park grounds found at the USFS Ocean Beach Picnic Area offer the beach traveler heading northward with an opportunity to enjoy miles of unspoiled pocket beaches surrounded by cliff-rimmed ocean bluffs and lush hillsides of wind swept pines. Heading southward on the beach is the unusual rock figure of Rocky Knoll, a volcanic rock formation protruding out of the Lane County Coastline in a knob-like shape. The course of Highway 101 traverses past Rocky Knoll and quickly meets the turnout for the Rock Creek Campground on the south side of the rock formation. The turnoff leads to an access road that arrives at the Rock Creek Campground, a campground managed by the U.S. Forest Service Department as part of the Siuslaw National Forest. The Rock Creek Campground is situated along Rock Creek and provides 15 camp sites on a seasonal basis from May to September. The campground facility offers piped drinking water, flush toilets, and each of the 15 camp sites has a table and grill. The Rock Creek Campground is well-liked for its limited size and the natural beauty of the area featuring ferns, shrubs, and coastal forests of Sitka Spruce, Douglas Fir and Western Hemlock. The course of Rock Creek heads west under Highway 101 and drains out onto Roosevelt Beach. Roosevelt Beach starts from the Rocky Knoll Area and extends southward for a few miles to the vicinity of the Big Creek Bridge providing a pristine beach area set within an unpopulated section of the Oregon Coast. Highway 101 continues south along the beach strand of Roosevelt Beach arriving at the Big Creek Bridge, a bridge built in 1931.
