Bob Straub State Park - Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge

From Cape Kiwanda, a beach strand heads southward towards the mouth opening of the Nestucca Bay Estuary and Spit Area creating a fine stretch of sandy beach areas interconnected together with naturally formed sand dunes facing the ocean shoreline. Many of the neighborhoods found within the Community of Pacific City front this beach strand and include community designed access points for reaching the ocean shores. At the south end of Pacific City is another Oregon State Park known as the Bob Straub State Park. This State Park offers access to the shoreline for exploring the beach strand as well as the sand dunes formed near the Nestucca Bay Spit Area. The Bob Straub State Park features ADA-supported restrooms, several paved parking lots and scenic picnic areas. The Nestucca River heads southward through the Pacific City Area and in time drains into the Nestucca Bay Estuary. Also, the Nestucca Bay Estuary is supported by the river waters flowing into it from the Little Nestucca River, a river located to the southeast of the Pacific City Area. The Nestucca Bay Estuary is another vital estuarine area supporting a diversity of animal and plant species. Some of this estuarine habitat area is now federally protected under the designation of the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge supports six subspecies of geese that utilize the area for winter grounds, feeding on the grass pastures surrounding the refuge. Also, the refuge is used by a variety of other species including waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, amphibians and mammals. The Pacific Ocean constantly impacts the water salinity levels of the estuary as well as creating an open break in the beach strand at its mouth opening. This opening serves as the separation point between the Pacific City Beach Strand and the beach areas located on the south side of the mouth opening, contained within the Community of Neskowin.
