Clay Myers State Natural Area at Whalen Island - The Community of Tierra Del Mar

The Sand Lake Estuary is one of Oregon’s two natural estuarine ecosystems and provides an important habitat for many wildlife species thriving within the intermixed zones of fresh and salt water. The Clay Myers State Natural Area at Whalen Island is one of the newest Oregon State Parks and affords the visitor with a rare glimpse into the park’s unspoiled wetlands and beach areas. The Clay Myers State Natural Area at Whalen Island offers superb birdwatching opportunities plus several nature trails meandering through the pristine wetlands of the area. From the Sand Lake Estuary, a lengthy beach strand runs southward past the Community of Tierra Del Mar, eventually ending at Cape Kiwanda. Tierra Del Mar, a part of Tillamook County is situated along this beach strand and features limited residential development built around small county streets. The isolated nature of the area and its pristine beach setting are the two major aspects drawing people to this quaint seaside community. South of Tierra Del Mar is a highway turnout offering pedestrian access to the beach plus vehicle access to areas on the beach designated for off road use. Heading south on the beach strand offers views looking towards the Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area and Haystack Rock, two of Pacific City’s famous landmarks.
