Cape Lookout - Sand Lake Recreation Area

Cape Lookout is the second cape encountered along the route of the Three Capes Scenic Drive. The cape rises stoutly above the ocean protruding almost two miles out to sea with sheer rock faces on both sides and the opening of a sea cave on its tip. The Cape Lookout Trail is a nature trail that traverses along this headland and affords the visitor with an amazing hiking experience and memorable views of the surrounding coastline. The Netarts Spit Area runs northward for five miles in length from the base of Cape Lookout helping to form the western edge of the Netarts Bay Estuary. Alongside this spit area is the location for the Cape Lookout State Park. This Oregon State Park includes both a Day-Use Park Area and a full service campground. Cape Lookout State Park provides a wide array of amenities including beach access, several nature/interpretive trails, multiple sleeping options, a meeting hall, hot showers and flush toilets. Camp Meriwether is a summer camp owned by the Boy Scouts of America/Cascade Pacific Council located south of Cape Lookout and offers a summer camping experience to many scouts alongside two miles of pristine beach and a fresh-water lake. A fine area for the recreational use of off-highway vehicles (OHV) is the Sand Lake Recreation Area set amongst the sand dunes situated near the Sand Lake Estuary. The Sand Lake Area offers several campgrounds overlooking the ocean plus vehicle access to the open beach areas and the surrounding dunes.
