The Town of Otter Rock - The Beach Strand of Beverly Beach and Moolack Beach

The cliffs fronting the Devils Punch Bowl State Natural Area and the Town of Otter Rock display many fascinating shapes and rock patterns, providing clues on how the coastline has been formed over its geological history. On the western edge of the Otter Rock Area is the Devils Punch Bowl, a hollow bowl formation craved out of the rocks drawing visitors interested in examining its unique shape firsthand. The rock formation is believed to be the remains of a collapsed sea cave worn away over time by the relentless wave action pounding away against its shoreline location. The main section of Otter Rock includes the state park plus a tiny strip of retail stores and dining eateries. The Otter Rock Area is the transition point where the basalt coastline changes over to sandy beach areas stretching southward for many miles into the City of Newport. Located to the south of the Otter Rock Area are the beach strands of Beverly Beach and Moolack Beach. The course of Highway 101 travels southward overlooking this same beach setting and provides several stopping points along the highway, intended for taking in the captivating views of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, the fresh salt air, and the oncoming surf arriving at the sandy shoreline.
