Rocky Creek State Scenic Viewpoint - The Community of Miroco

From the City of Depoe, Highway 101 heads southward passing by the Whale Cove Area, and then arrives at the Rocky Creek State Scenic Viewpoint, an Oregon State Park built on a basalt point overlooking the ocean. The Rocky Creek State Scenic Viewpoint features outstanding panoramic views of the coastline including ocean vistas of both the Whale Cove Area to the north and the Community of Miroco to the south. The park is a great spot for enjoying evening sunsets as the sun descends colorfully into the western sky. The park design offers several lawn areas with picnic tables, a public restroom building, paved parking lots, and direct access to Highway 101. Also, the park location is one of the 28 areas designated as a stopping point for the whale watching program known as “Whale Watch Spoken Here”. The focus of this program emphasizes whale watching activities as an educational experience during the height the gray whale winter and spring migrations with specially trained volunteers on hand to assist visitors in spotting gray whales out in the ocean. Located a few miles south of the park is the historical Rocky Creek (Ben Jones) Highway Bridge, a landmark of the old coastal highway system and the right of entry into the Community of Miroco. This bridge was designed by Conde B. McCullough, Oregon’s master bridge builder of the 1920s and 1930s, and has been recently renovated. The area surrounding the bridge has become a favorite spot for photographers capturing the scenic beauty of this coastline setting. The Community of Miroco is a quaint county residential area known for its roaring wave action found along its shoreline and its horizon views of Gull Rock, a picturesque rock formation located offshore from the Town of Otter Rock.
