The City of Depoe Bay – The Depoe Bay Harbor Area

Entering into the City of Depoe Bay, the sandy beaches of the Lincoln Beach Area change over into rugged basalt coastlines extending southward for many miles, finally ending at the Town of Otter Rock. The City of Depoe Bay carries the distinction as the Whale Watching Capital of the World and is a favorite spot for observing gray whales while they travel south to their winter breeding grounds in Mexico and north to their spring/summer feeding grounds in Alaska. Also, a resident pod of gray whales lives in the area for almost ten months of the year offering additional opportunities to observe them in the wild. Also, the Depoe Bay Area is the location of the World’s Smallest Navigable Harbor. Due to the short distance from the harbor docks out to the ocean, Depoe Bay is a popular place for charter boat operators offering deep sea fishing and whale watching excursions. In addition, the inner harbor area is the site for the Coast Guard Station Depoe Bay, a U.S. Coast Guard Facility delivering search and rescue operations to mariners out at sea. Another landmark of the Oregon Coast is the Depoe Bay Highway 101 Bridge, one of the city’s most photographed Points of Interest. The bridge is the design brilliance of Conde B. McCullough, Oregon’s famous bridge architect who was instrumental in creating many of the scenic bridges built along the Oregon Coast Highway System in the 1920s and 1930s.
