Cape Meares - Three National Wildlife Refuges

The Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint features a wonderful array of outdoor activities for the visitor to enjoy including touring the Cape Meares Lighthouse and its associated Interpretive Gift Store. The State Park offers a variety of nature trails for exploring the beautiful scenery of the Cape Meares Area including the old growth forest of Sitka Spruce and Western Hemlock thriving within the boundaries of the Cape Meares National Wildlife Refuge. The park grounds include a variety of picnic tables and grassy lawn areas for taking in the wonderful outdoor scenery and savoring the flavors of an outdoor picnic. For wildlife viewing, the park grounds contain several viewpoints for observing the seabirds nesting on the cliffs and the offshore rocks as well as providing the setting for birdwatching endangered species including Peregrine Falcons and Bald Eagles. The location of the State Park affords the visitor with the opportunity to observe three national wildlife refuges directly from its grounds including the Cape Meares National Wildlife Refuge, the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and the Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge. Two notable rocks found just offshore from Cape Meares include Pillar Rock and Pyramid Rock and are visible from the viewpoint situated near the Cape Meares Lighthouse. Both rocks are part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and provide habitat protection during nesting season to several seabird species including Common Murres and Brandt’s Cormorants. The third refuge visible from the State Park is the Three Arch Rocks National Wildlife Refuge. This 15-acre refuge is located about a half of a mile offshore from the Community of Oceanside and is one of the Oregon Coast’s most recognizable landmarks. The refuge offers habitat protection to a large colony of Common Murres as well as to Oregon’s largest breeding colony of Tufted Puffins.
