The Five Community Areas of Lincoln City - D River State Recreation Site |
|||||||||||||
| In 1965, the City of Lincoln City was formed through the combination of five local community areas. After a contest was held with local school children submitting the names for the new city, the name of Lincoln City was selected. The areas incorporated into the city included Oceanlake, Delake, Nelscott, Taft and Cutler City. The Oceanlake Area is located at the north end of Lincoln City and is named after a lake that once was positioned there between the ocean shores and Devils Lake. Later, the waters of the lake were drained and its body cavity filled in for real estate purposes. At the south end of Devils Lake is an exit opening forming the waters of D River. D River carries the distinction as being the Worlds Shortest River measuring at 120 feet in length and meets the ocean at the D River State Recreation Site. The D River State Recreation Site is an Oregon State Park located along Highway 101 and provides access to the beach strand fronting the City of Lincoln City. Due to Lincoln Citys proximity to the 45th Parallel, the city carries the distinction as being the Kite Flying Capital of the World. Two prestigious kite festivals are held each spring and fall at the D River State Recreation Site. D River serves as the dividing point separating the north and south sections of Lincoln City. The Delake Area borders the south end of Devils Lake and includes a portion of the beach strand heading south from the D River State Recreation Site. The Nelscott Area is the third neighborhood located in the southern end of Lincoln City and is well-known for its charming Highway 101 shopping corridor. The Taft Area is located at the south end of the beach strand and overlooks the mouth of the Siletz Bay Estuary. Taft is a popular area for accessing the ocean beach strand as well as the sandy beach areas found along the Siletz Bay Estuary. The fifth area is Cutler City, situated on a small peninsula surrounded by the tidal waters of the Siletz Bay Estuary as well as the creek waters of Schooner and Drift Creeks. |
